Spinlock cleats are the load-release cleats trusted by dinghy sailors, yacht racers, and cruisers who need to dump line under pressure without a fight. Unlike traditional jamming cleats, Spinlock's snap-action mechanism lets you release a loaded rope by simply lifting it, no awkward yanking or wrist-twisting required. The range covers everything from the PXR race cleat for high-load control lines to Powerclutch rope clutches for keelboat halyards. Find the cleat that suits your boat below.

What is a Spinlock cleat?
A Spinlock cleat is a rope cleat designed to release under load by lifting the rope upwards, rather than twisting or pulling it sideways. The snap-action mechanism uses a hinged jaw that holds the line firmly when loaded and opens cleanly when the sailor wants to release it. They are used widely across dinghies, keelboats, and yachts for control lines, halyards, and reefing systems.
What is the difference between a Spinlock PXR and a cam cleat?
A traditional cam cleat holds the rope between two spring-loaded toothed cams, and you release the line by pulling it upwards out of the jaws. The Spinlock PXR uses a different mechanism: a single hinged jaw that snaps open when lifted, allowing instant release even under heavy load. The PXR also has lower drag when sheeting in, which makes it popular for high-load control lines on racing dinghies.
What rope size do Spinlock PXR cleats take?
Spinlock PXR cleats are available in two sizes covering ropes from 2mm to 10mm. The PXR0206 takes 2 to 6mm rope and the PXR0810 takes 8 to 10mm. Match the cleat size to the actual diameter of your rope for reliable holding and clean release. Using a rope that is too thin or too thick for the cleat will affect performance.
Are Spinlock cleats suitable for dinghy racing?
Yes, Spinlock cleats are widely used in dinghy racing. The ability to release under full load is a real advantage during fast manoeuvres and gust response, where releasing a jammed line quickly can be the difference between a recovery and a capsize.
How do you fit a Spinlock cleat?
Most Spinlock cleats fit with two stainless steel bolts or screws through the deck or fitting, the centre mount uses the same hole pattern as many standard cam cleats. Position the cleat so the rope runs cleanly through it at the correct angle, usually with a fairlead or pulley block leading the line in. Make sure the area above the cleat is clear so the rope can be lifted vertically to release. Use marine sealant under the base to prevent water ingress.
