ILCA sailing

Ask any experienced ILCA sailor what separates a good day on the water from a frustrating one, and they will rarely mention the big ticket items. It is the small stuff. The fiddly split ring that will not open with cold hands. The clew flying away from the boom on a breezy reach. The hiking strap that is too loose upwind and too tight downwind.

The good news? Fixing these niggles costs very little. Here are five tiny accessories that punch well above their weight for your ILCA or Laser sailing, whether you are club racing on a Sunday or working your way up the national circuit.

1. Laser/ILCA Clew Strap

A flappy clew is slow. When the clew of your sail lifts away from the boom, you lose sail shape and power exactly when you need it most. The Laser/ILCA clew strap solves this for less than the price of a club race entry.

Made in the UK from 25mm webbing, the strap wraps around your boom and secures with velcro to hold the clew of your sail close and tidy. The clever part is the adjustability: set the tension so the strap still slides freely along the boom when you pull the outhaul on or ease it off. You keep full control of your sail shape while the clew stays exactly where it should be.

It comes in a choice of colours too, so you can match it to the rest of your boat. A small detail, but we know how much sailors love a colour-coded setup.

2. Little Hawk Mk2 Wind Indicator

Tell tales on the sail are great, but sometimes you want a clear, instant read on the wind without craning your neck at the masthead. The Little Hawk Mk2 wind indicator mounts at gooseneck height in front of your mast, right in your natural line of sight.

Designed for single handed dinghies like the ILCA, it gives you quick and accurate wind direction reference both upwind and downwind. That is especially valuable on the run, where sailing by the lee is fast and a masthead burgee is no help at all when your eyes should be on the water ahead.

The adjustable bracket clips on and off without tools, and the aluminium support rod can be bent to your preferred angle. If it takes a knock during a capsize or boat park shuffle, you simply bend it straight again. There is a reason this little indicator is a best seller with sailors around the world.

3. ILCA Mast Retainer Line

This is the one item on this list that is easy to forget and costly to ignore. The ILCA mast retainer line is required equipment at ILCA international events, and sailing without one can land you a 5 point penalty. That is a painful way to lose places you worked hard for on the water.

Beyond compliance, it does an important job. Made from 3mm Dyneema with an eye splice at one end and a stopper ball at the other, it passes through the deck plate and around the mast, then back on itself. This setup lets the mast rotate freely while stopping the deck plate from being ripped up if the mast spins too far. It also keeps your rig with the boat in a capsize.

Attachment and removal take seconds thanks to the stopper ball design, and it comes in six colour combinations. For a few pounds, it is the cheapest insurance on your boat.

4. Laser/ILCA Adjustable Toe/Hiking Strap System

Your hiking strap tension should not be a compromise. Upwind in a breeze, you want it looser so you can get your body further outboard and flatten the boat. Downwind, you want it tighter so you can react quickly and stay connected to the boat through the waves.

The adjustable toe/hiking strap system lets you change tension on the fly. The kit gives you 2m of 4mm Dyneema rope with a thimble attached, plus an Aero Clamcleat, which is everything you need to rig a simple, reliable adjuster. Full setup instructions are on the product page, and most sailors rig it on the starboard side of the cockpit.

Once you have sailed with an adjustable strap, you will wonder how you ever managed with a fixed one. It is one of those upgrades that pays you back on every single leg of the course.

5. Push Button Quick Release Pin for Your Vang/Kicker

If you have ever stood in the boat park with freezing fingers, battling a split ring to get your kicker on or off the mast, this one is for you. The push button quick release pin replaces the standard pin and split ring on your Harken or Ronstan vang with a simple push button. Press, pull, done.

We have sourced these specifically for the Laser and ILCA, and they have been tested and raced for years by 4.7 National Champion and Sailing Chandlery sponsored sailor Jack Graham-Troll. Rigging and derigging become quicker, easier, and far less frustrating, especially in winter.

Two things to note: the pin fits the official Harken and Ronstan kicker fittings but not Holt, Allen or replica systems (we stock another version for those), and because the handle and button are aluminium, give it a rinse with fresh water after sailing to keep it in top condition.

Small Kit, Big Gains For ILCA Sailing

None of these accessories will break the bank, but together they make your ILCA easier to rig, easier to sail, and faster around the course. They also make brilliant gifts for the ILCA sailor in your life, or a smart way to spend that club voucher.

Every item on this list is in stock and ready to go. Order before 2pm Monday to Friday and we will dispatch your order the same day, with UK next working day delivery available on orders placed before 2pm Monday to Thursday. Spend over £95 and UK standard delivery is free.
