When most people think of a boat cover, they picture harsh winter months, icy mornings, and protecting their pride and joy during long lay-ups. But here’s the truth: a boat cover isn’t just for the off-season. In fact, summer might be one of the most important times to keep your boat properly protected by using a boat cover.
From UV rays to sudden storms, bird droppings to sap falling from nearby trees, summer comes with its own unique set of challenges. Whether you’re sailing dinghies, keelboats, or cruising yachts, investing in a quality boat cover can protect your boat, save you money, and make sure you spend more time sailing and less time cleaning or repairing.
Let’s dive into why every sailor should use a boat cover all year round – and why summer is no exception
The summer sun is glorious for sailing, but brutal on boats. Prolonged UV exposure can weaken and fade sails, damage paintwork, and cause fittings to become brittle. Gelcoat, varnish, and rope covers can all lose their colour and strength when left uncovered under direct sunlight.
A boat cover acts like a high-quality sunscreen for your boat. By blocking UV rays, it prevents premature wear and extends the life of everything from your mast and deck fittings to your lines and tiller. Over time, this adds up to significant savings – replacing a faded deck or cracked fittings is far more expensive than investing in a boat cover.
Summer might mean sunshine, but in the UK (and many other sailing spots), it also means unpredictable showers and the occasional thunderstorm. A quick downpour can leave puddles in cockpits, waterlogged sails, and a slippery deck.
By using a fitted boat cover, you stop rainwater from collecting where it shouldn’t. That means less chance of mould forming in the boat, fewer soggy sails to deal with, and no unwanted water damage. A boat cover with breathable fabrics is especially useful – it allows moisture to escape without letting rain in, keeping everything dry and fresh.
If you store your boat outdoors in the summer, chances are it’s near trees, birdlife, or open spaces. That means one thing: debris. Tree sap, falling leaves, bird droppings, and even dust blown in from nearby roads or boatyards can all settle on your deck.
Cleaning off dried sap or bird mess isn’t just unpleasant – it can actually damage your boat’s finish. Acidic droppings can stain and eat into paint, while sap is notoriously difficult to remove without harsh chemicals. A boat cover keeps these hazards away from your deck, reducing cleaning time and preventing long-term damage.
Many sailors assume mould only appears in damp, enclosed winter storage. But warm summer weather combined with trapped rainwater creates the perfect breeding ground for mildew. Leave your boat uncovered after a sudden shower, and within days you could find black spots spreading across sails, ropes, or wooden trim.
A properly fitted, breathable cover keeps moisture off while still allowing airflow. This balance prevents the warm, damp conditions mould loves – keeping your boat smelling fresh and looking sharp, no matter the weather
Leaving sails and sheets exposed to the summer sun is a surefire way to shorten their lifespan. Even if you roll them away neatly after sailing, constant UV exposure on the deck or in the cockpit weakens fibres over time. Dyneema, polyester, and even high-tech laminates degrade faster when left exposed.
A cover ensures your rigging, sails, and ropes stay shaded and protected when not in use. That means better performance on the water and fewer costly replacements down the line
From seagulls to spiders, uncovered boats in summer can attract all sorts of unwanted visitors. Birds may choose your deck as their favourite resting (or nesting) spot, while insects and small animals sometimes find their way into cockpits, sail bags, or lockers.
A boat cover acts as a physical barrier, deterring wildlife from turning your boat into their home. You’ll spend less time cleaning your boat, and more time sailing - because your boat cover is doing the heavy lifting for you
For dinghy sailors and racers, time is precious. The last thing you want to do before a regatta is scrub mould, wipe down bird mess, or sponge out a flooded cockpit. A cover keeps your boat in “ready-to-sail” condition. Simply arrive at the boat park, whip off the boat cover, and hit the water.
This is especially important for competitive sailors – keeping your boat clean and dry ensures it’s performing at its best. After all, a boat that spends less time drying out and more time sailing is a boat that wins races
Perhaps the most overlooked benefit of a boat cover is the sheer convenience. Instead of scrubbing and cleaning your boat before every outing, you simply remove the boat cover, and you’re good to go. The hours you save on cleaning can be spent actually enjoying sailing.
And when you do need to give your boat a once-over, you’ll find it’s a much easier job. Protected boats require less scrubbing, fewer harsh cleaning products, and less elbow grease overall
Whether you sail a dinghy, keelboat, or yacht, your boat is an investment. Keeping it in top condition protects its resale value – and a well-maintained boat with a history of proper care will always fetch a higher price.
Buyers notice when a boat has been left exposed. Faded gelcoat, worn ropes, or mildew stains can all knock value off your boat. A simple boat cover is one of the easiest ways to preserve appearance and performance, showing potential buyers you’ve looked after your kit properly
At the end of the day, a boat cover is about peace of mind. You can walk away from your boat knowing it’s protected from the elements, whatever the weather throws at it. Whether you’re leaving it overnight after a club race or storing it between weekend sails, a boat cover lets you relax knowing your boat is safe
A boat cover is not created equal. Here are a few things to consider when picking the right boat cover for your boat:
Material – Breathable, waterproof fabrics are best to balance protection and airflow
Fit – A well-fitted cover stops water pooling and ensures full protection
Durability – Reinforced stitching and UV-resistant materials last longer
Ease of Use – Quick-fit designs mean you’ll actually use it every time you put your boat away
Investing in the right boat cover pays for itself quickly in reduced maintenance, longer gear life, and saved cleaning time.
Summer sailing is some of the best of the year – long days on the water, warm evenings, and plenty of time with friends and fellow sailors. But summer is also when your boat faces some of its harshest conditions: blazing sun, sudden showers, bird mess, and debris.
A boat cover is a small investment that pays huge dividends in boat care, convenience, and performance. By protecting your boat year-round, you’ll spend more time sailing and less time scrubbing – and your boat will thank you with years of reliable service.
So next time you finish a summer sail, don’t just leave your boat uncovered. Throw on a boat cover, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing your boat is protected, rain or shine
