Kingfisher's Evolution range is the dinghy sailor's rope. Developed alongside top UK dinghy manufacturers and the racers who sail them, the Evolution lineup covers every job on a modern racing dinghy: halyards, sheets, control lines, kickers, downhauls, outhauls and tapered spinnaker sheets. This is the umbrella collection for the whole range, so you can compare constructions side by side before picking the right rope for the job.
The Evolution lineup splits into a few clear groups. Evolution Race is the workhorse: a Dyneema SK78 core inside a hard wearing polyester cover, ideal for halyards, kickers and high load control lines. Evolution Performance is the all-polyester equivalent for lower load control lines where Dyneema is overkill. Evolution Sheet has a polypropylene core inside a polyester cover, lightweight and floaty for mainsheets and jib sheets that get adjusted constantly. Evolution Breeze is the continuous splice rope with a Technora cover for high-friction applications. Evolution Splice and Evolution Taper handle specialist jobs on spinnaker sheets and tapered halyards.
Most Evolution ropes come in 3mm, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm diameters, which covers nearly every line on a Topper, ILCA, RS Aero, RS200, RS400, RS800 or any other modern dinghy. If you're not sure which Evolution rope suits the application, our Dinghy Rope Buying Guide walks through it with worked examples.

What is Kingfisher Evolution dinghy rope?
Kingfisher Evolution is a range of dinghy ropes developed alongside leading UK dinghy manufacturers and racers. The range covers every line on a modern racing dinghy: halyards, sheets, control lines, kickers, outhauls, downhauls and spinnaker sheets. Each Evolution rope is built for a specific job rather than being a one-rope-fits-all line, which is why most racing dinghies use several Evolution products on the same boat.
Which Kingfisher Evolution rope should I use for control lines?
For dinghy control lines, the two main Kingfisher Evolution choices are Evolution Race (Dyneema SK78 core with polyester cover) for higher load lines like kickers and cunninghams, and Evolution Performance (all-polyester) for lower load control lines where Dyneema is overkill. Most dinghy sailors use 3mm or 4mm Evolution Race on heavily loaded controls and Evolution Performance on the rest.
What's the difference between Kingfisher Evolution Race and Evolution Sheet?
Evolution Race has a Dyneema SK78 core inside a polyester cover, built for low-stretch, high-load applications like halyards and kicker lines. Evolution Sheet has a polypropylene core inside a polyester cover, built to be lightweight, floaty and soft for mainsheets and jib sheets that get adjusted constantly. Use Race where stretch matters, Sheet where handling matters.
What size Kingfisher Evolution rope do I need for my dinghy?
Most dinghy Evolution rope sits in the 3mm to 6mm range. As a rough guide, 3mm and 4mm work for control lines and trapeze adjustment, 5mm is common for halyards and kicker tails, and 6mm or 7mm suits mainsheets on bigger dinghies and skiffs. For class-specific guidance on rope sizes for an ILCA, Topper, RS Aero or other dinghy, our Dinghy Rope Buying Guide walks through it in detail.
Can I splice Kingfisher Evolution rope myself?
Yes, most Kingfisher Evolution ropes are designed to be spliceable. Evolution Race takes a standard buried splice using the Dyneema core. Evolution Breeze is specifically built for continuous endless splices using just the cover. If you'd rather not splice your own, we offer a rope splicing and tapering service.
