What should I look for when buying a sailing buoyancy aid?
The most important thing to look at when buying a buoyancy aid for sailing is the sizing and weight it supports. When out on the water sailing you want to ensure your buoyancy aid will be able to support your weight should you end up in the water. You should review the size chart for your preferred buoyancy aid to ensure the size you require supports your weight.
What is the difference between a buoyancy aid and a life jacket?
The difference between a buoyancy aid and life jacket is that a buoyancy aid will support your weight but won't necessarily keep you afloat or turn you face up. A life jacket will make you float and most are designed to turn you over and keep your head clear of the water.
What is a PFD?
PFD is short for Personal Floatation Device and is essentially another word for a buoyancy aid.
What buoyancy rating should I look for in a buoyancy aid?
Most sailing buoyancy aids used for dinghy sailing and racing are 50 Newton. There are higher rated buoyancy aids but these tend to restrict movement and make it harder when sailing a dinghy.
Should I wear a buoyancy aid for dinghy sailing?
Yes, our recommendation is to always wear a buoyancy aid for sailing. You never know what could happen and one accidental slip could have you in the water. Most sailing clubs and classes recommend you wear a buoyancy aid when going sailing.
How can I make my buoyancy aid last longer?
Quite simply you've got to look after it. When coming off the water ensure you give your buoyancy aid a good rinse with fresh water and keep it out of the sunlight allowing to air dry. Ensure your buoyancy aid is stored not damp and ensure it is not crushed in your sailing bag.
Which brands of sailing buoyancy aid do you sell?
Here at Sailing Chandlery we sell buoyancy aids from Gill, Rooster and Zhik. We have found these to be the most popular for dinghy sailing in the UK and we have a range with different features for a range of on the water activities.
