What are hiking pads used for?
Hiking Pads are used as protection between you as the sailor and the boat. They wrap around the back of your leg and provide a padded protection between the back of your legs and the boats hull. This allows you to hike harder and for longer without pain.
Should I buy hiking pants/pads or a hiking wetsuit?
This depends on you and your sailing. If you are always sailing a hiking boat, and only ever sail that boat a hiking wetsuit is going to be perfect. If you sail a variety of boats then hiking pads which can come out of your wetsuit might be best.
Can I use hiking pads with my existing wetsuit?
Yes, most wetsuits have the space inside for you to insert hiking pads.
Where should my hiking pads sit on the leg?
We would usually say they should sit right underneath your backside and run down the back of your leg.
Are hiking wetsuits reinforced in key areas?
Yes, most modern wetsuits have protection in key wear areas such as knees, shins and in this case the backside and back of leg.
Do hiking pads actually improve performance?
You've only got to look at the top sailors in your fleet, the large majority will be wearing them.
