What is Kingfisher double braid rope?
Kingfisher double braid is a polyester rope made from a braided polyester core inside a braided polyester cover, heat set after braiding to reduce stretch. Kingfisher sell it under the name Braid on Braid, but yacht owners and riggers more commonly call it double braid. It's the standard cruising rope used for sheets, halyards and control lines on most production yachts.
Is Kingfisher double braid suitable for halyards?
Yes, Kingfisher double braid works well as a halyard on cruising yachts. With around 3.7% stretch at 20% of break load it holds a hoisted sail taut without obvious sag, and the polyester core resists UV and weathering far better than a wire-cored halyard. For racing yachts where halyard stretch directly costs you sail shape, switch to a Dyneema cored rope instead.
What diameter Kingfisher double braid do I need?
For most cruising yachts, the typical diameters are 8mm for control lines, 10mm to 12mm for primary sheets, and 12mm to 14mm for halyards. Bigger boats over 35 feet may need 14mm to 16mm sheets and halyards. The right size depends on load, your winch and cleat size, and how comfortable the rope feels in your hand under load.
Is Kingfisher double braid easy to splice?
Yes, Kingfisher double braid is one of the most splice-friendly ropes available. The braided construction means you can bury the core inside the cover with a standard fid, making eye splices for shackles or sail attachments straightforward. If you'd prefer we splice the rope ready to use, just send us your measurements and we'll quote.
What's the difference between Kingfisher double braid and 3 strand polyester?
Kingfisher double braid is stronger, more flexible and easier on the hands than 3 strand polyester. The braided cover protects the core from UV and abrasion, and the construction runs smoothly through blocks and clutches. 3 strand polyester is cheaper and traditionally used for mooring lines and anchor warps, but for working lines like sheets and halyards, double braid is the better rope.
