When the colder months arrive, winter sailing can feel like a test of both endurance and preparation. Staying fast, safe, and comfortable is all about having the right winter sailing kit in your bag. At Sailing Chandlery, we work with some of the UK's most dedicated sailors, and this season, our sponsored sailor, Jack Graham-Troll, has given us a look inside his own kit bag for tackling the winter sailing season.
This blog serves as a guide to what Jack relies on when he's out on the water, as well as a chance to highlight why each item is important. If you are looking to extend your sailing season into the coldest months of the year, this is the kit you'll want to think about.
One of the most important pieces of winter sailing kit in Jack's bag is the Zhik Performance Racecut PFD. This buoyancy aid is designed with racing in mind, combining freedom of movement with a close, secure fit. Unlike bulkier models, the streamlined cut makes it easy to move around the boat without snagging.
For winter sailing, a snug fit also means fewer gaps for cold spray to sneak in. It's practical, safe, and performance-driven, which is why Jack never leaves without it.
Next in the bag is the Zhik Microfleece X Skiff Suit. This is the foundation of Jack's winter sailing wardrobe. The Microfleece X material keeps the warmth in without sacrificing flexibility, while reinforced panels provide durability in the areas that take the most wear and tear.
To add warmth up top, Jack layers the Zhik Microfleece X Top. It pairs perfectly with the Skiff Suit, giving a consistent level of insulation across the body. Together, these two layers form the core of his kit bag, keeping him warm but still light on his feet.
Underneath, Jack adds the Zhik Hydrophobic Long Sleeve Top. This layer is lightweight, fast-drying, and perfect for keeping moisture away from the skin. In the winter, where cold spray is a constant, this makes all the difference between comfort and a chilling day on the water.
Hydrophobic fabrics also mean you can wear fewer layers without compromising on warmth. That's a big advantage when you need freedom of movement for racing.
Hiking comfort is crucial in dinghy sailing, and Jack swears by the Zhik Power Pads. They provide extra support without straining your legs or your back. For long sessions on the water, the difference in endurance is huge.
In winter, fatigue can creep in faster due to the cold, so the right support gear is essential for both performance and safety.
Cold feet are one of the biggest complaints in Winter Sailing Kit. Jack's go-to is the Zhik 360 Boots, which combine grip, durability, and warmth in one package. These boots are designed for high-performance dinghy sailing, giving you the traction you need when moving around the boat quickly, even on wet surfaces.
Good boots mean fewer slips, more stability, and warmer feet - a trifecta that every winter sailor will appreciate.
While Jack's core kit keeps him insulated, the smaller accessories are just as vital. For the head, a Sailing Beanie is a must-have. A lot of heat escapes from the head, so a good thermal beanie makes a noticeable difference on those icy mornings.
Thermal socks are another item Jack always keeps in his bag. Pairing them with the Zhik 360 Boots ensures his feet stay warm and dry, no matter how cold the spray.
And of course, a strong pair of winter sailing gloves is non-negotiable. Cold, wet hands can ruin a race faster than anything else.
For the harshest conditions, Jack packs a drysuit. When spray tops and skiff suits are not enough, a drysuit creates a complete barrier from the elements. It's the ultimate line of defence against the cold, and while not needed for every session, it is a safety net Jack never overlooks when the forecast looks grim.
It might surprise some sailors, but Jack always includes a pair of polarised sailing sunglasses in his kit. Low winter sun reflecting off the water can be blinding, and even in colder months, UV protection is essential. Sunglasses also cut down glare, helping you read the water and conditions better.
Finally, a rash vest rounds out the bag. It's an often overlooked item, but it adds a smooth base layer that prevents chafing from other kit and gives you a little extra warmth. Simple, but effective, it's one of those essentials you only really miss when you forget it.

Nice-looking bung, all in one piece. No more looking for the bung when you have let it drain from the last time, and bought this to create a second drain socket in my Solo.
They have good paddings
It fits exactly fine to laser pico. Straps are very usefull. Hole at the back helps you store your upper mast easily under the cover. Looks very durable. Delivery was very fast. Thanks

Fantastic product. Toasty feel
Really good selection of rope sizes, delivered speedily. Great idea to put the offcuts to good use. Caused a few laughs when people realised what I'd ordered ;-)
The sales team were quick responding to our questions, dispatched to us promptly, and the product is a perfect replacement for our old tiller which ended up at the bottom of a lake!
Love the fact they don’t leak.
You do need to squeeze to get liquid out. Which is so much better. Don’t lose liquid etc.
nice size and robust
Great for when it’s not too cold. But is windy and wet. Needing to stay dry on top.
Very easy to install. May need some additional sealing for complete water-tightness.
