What is Rooster sailing clothing and where is it from?
Rooster® was founded in 1999 by Steve Cockerill with a simple mission: to make high-quality, accessible sailing gear for everyone. Starting out in his spare room in the UK, Steve relied on friends to help create the very first products — driven by his own frustration at not being able to find kit that truly worked. Based in Fareham, Hampshire, Rooster has grown from that spare-room start-up into a globally respected sailing clothing brand. Today, Rooster is a UK-based global sailing brand designing high-performance gear trusted by sailors from grassroots to Olympians, offering technical clothing, buoyancy aids, neoprene, accessories, and dinghy parts for dinghy, keelboat, and inshore racing. The brand remains deeply connected to the sailing community, actively partnering with class associations, yacht clubs, and youth sailing programmes around the world.
What is the Rooster Aquafleece and why is it so popular?
The Aquafleece® is Rooster's most iconic product and the garment the brand is best known for. Originally introduced in 2002, Aquafleece was one of the very first clothing products Rooster brought to market. It quickly became a staple for sailors around the world thanks to its unique combination of warmth, flexibility, and weather protection. The concept was straightforward but clever: rather than a purely waterproof spray top or a purely warm fleece, the Aquafleece combines both — a water-resistant outer with a soft fleece inner — making it genuinely versatile across the full UK sailing season.
What Rooster sailing clothing is available, and what does the range cover?
Rooster sailing clothing covers every layer and condition a dinghy or keelboat sailor is likely to encounter. The core range includes: Aquafleece, Spray Tops, Base Layers, Wetsuits, Gloves, Hats and Sailing Jackets.
How does Rooster sailing clothing compare to brands like Zhik and Gill?
Rooster occupies a distinct and compelling position in the sailing clothing market. While Zhik is known for its elite racing pedigree and premium price point, and Gill for its offshore heritage, Rooster has built its reputation on delivering genuine technical performance at a more accessible price — making it particularly popular with club racers, junior sailors, and sailors who want quality kit without the premium brand premium.
