If you've spent any time browsing Sailing Gear, there's a good chance you've come across Zhik - The Australian brand known for producing high-performance sailing kit that's sleek, technical, and ... let's face it, seemingly pricier than many of its competitors.
At Sailing Chandlery, we often get asked. "Why is Zhik more expensive?" or "Is Zhik worth the extra cost?".
This blog post aims to break it all down - from materials and design to performance and longevity - so you can decide if Zhik gear is the right choice for you and your sailing.
Zhik didn't enter the sailing scene just to offer more of the same. The brand was founded in 2003 with a mission to innovate.
From the start, Zhik focused on creating cutting-edge kit for elite sailors, particularly Olympic level athletes.
Unlike some brands that produce general-purpose outdoor gear adapted for sailing, Zhik designs everything specifically for sailors, or cruisers. Each piece is engineered for performance on the water, and that level of precision design doesn't come cheap.
Zhik uses high-end technical fabrics that often outperform the more budget-friendly options used by competitors. These materials are not only chosen for performance, but also for durability, weight-saving, and comfort.
Some material highlights include:
These materials cost more to produce and source, but they ensure longer product life and better performance - particularly important for competitive sailors.
While Zhik kit may cost more upfront, it's often built to last significantly longer than cheaper alternatives. Many of our customers report that their Zhik wetsuits, smocks and accessories outlast other brands by years, even with heavy, regular use.
In the long run, spending a bit more on gear that lasts longer can save you money compared to replacing budget kit frequently.
Zhik doesn't just design gear in isolation - it's co-developed with Olympic sailors, offshore teams, and dinghy champions. This means every feature has been tested, refined, and battle-proven.
You're paying not just for a product, but for elite-level performance and knowledge backed into every design.
Let's not underestimate the visual appeal. Zhik's kit is known for its sleek, modern look - often minimal branding, clean lines, and performance-cut tailoring.
Some might call this "paying for the brand", but much of the cost goes into tailored fits that move with the body and streamlined construction that reduces draf and bulk - things that make a genuine difference on the water.
For many sailors, it's not just about looking good - it's about feeling comfortable, confident, and race-ready in gear that fits and performs beautifully.
Zhik is also investing in eco-friendly initiatives, which can influence pricing. This includes:
This commitment is a part of growing trend in technical outdoor gear, and while it adds cost, many sailors are happy to invest in sustainable choices.
Zhik stands behind its products with a solid warranty and excellent customer service. At Sailing Chandlery, we've seen fast resolutions to warranty claims, and Zhik is known for supporting sailors if a product doesn't live up to their expectations.
Cheaper kit often lacks this support - so while you might pay less upfront, you may find yourself stuck with faulty gear or costly replacements.
It depends on your sailing style, frequency, and personal priorities. Here's a breakdown:
Zhik | Cheaper Alternatives |
You sail frequently in varied conditions | You're an occasional sailor |
You race competitively | You sail recreationally and casually |
You value long-term durability | You want budget-friendly short-term gear |
You need top-end performance | Basic performance is fine for you |
You prefer tailored fit and tech features | You're happy with standard fit and materials |
Zhik kit may look more expensive on the surface, but when you dig into what you're actually getting, the value becomes clear. You're investing in:
At Sailing Chandlery, we're proud to stock Zhik because we believe in quality over quantity, and for many sailors, that's exactly what Zhik delivers.

Love this bag. Great wet area within it as well.
Excellent to use as for a birthday gift to family members keen on sailing
Currently 2 weeks into an Eastern Mediterranean trip with these shoes. Grip is great and they drain really well. Comfort is brilliant… as long as you take the right size. I followed the measurement guidelines and they work well. Highly recommend shoe!
Quick despatch and a good quality product. Moves smoothly along the boom.
Ordered a dyneema RSAero halyard on the Thursday. It arrived by mid day on the Friday and was used on the Saturday. Excellent product and service. Thank you
Reeves really easily, jams well and excellent grip
I bought the burgee and clip for a Hartley 12 and found downwind sailing much easier single handed. The clip came with the screws so it was a 10 minute job including dropping the mast. Website worked well again and the items were delivered quickly so a good job all round.
Work really well.
Lovely looking Lazer decal, sticks very well and easy to fit.
What a lovely rubber stick.
Fits perfectly, and comes with everything you need
I have bought so many this from chandlery, but this is the first time I felt disappointed, due to the size of the tape supplied.
I could of bought from elsewhere and got a much bigger roll for a similar price.
Perfect with 6 mm shockcord for reefing mainsail. Delivered promptly.
Cover arrived after three days and is well made and completely covers the boat boom up . The straps and clips all work fine. Good product.
