don't forget

When you're out on the water, protecting your head and neck with a good Sailing Hat is essential, and it's not worth skimping on - but you shouldn't stop there.

Make sure you're also using a high-quality suncream that's made specifically for sailing and water sports. Unlike generic high street brands, purpose-made formulas are designed to stay effective in the wind, spray and sweat, so you can focus on sailing. Not reapplying.

Not quite sure what UV to use? If it's likely to reach over 30 degrees, use UV50. If it's not a total scorcher out there, stick with the UV30. Either way, it's worth taking your sun protection onboard to reapply throughout the day.

Whilst a good sun hat, and a high factor suncream are essentials, staying safe and comfortable on the water in the summer means thinking a bit bigger. Here are a few additional items you might want to consider:

  • Reusable Water Bottle - Staying hydrated is key, especially when the sun is beaming down on you. Opt for an insulated bottle to keep your drinks cold all day, even on deck.
  • Polarised Sunglasses - Cut the glare off the water and protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Bonus: you'll see the breeze on the water more clearly.
  • Lightweight UV clothing - Technical tops and neck buffs with built-in SPF let you cover up without overheating.
  • After-Sun - Wind, salt and sun can dry your skin quickly. A soothing balm or moisturiser is great to have on hand after a long day afloat.
  • Dry Bag - Ideal for keeping drinks, snacks or spare clothes protected. A dry bag also doubles as a splash-storage option for electronics.
  • Personal Safety Kit - It's always smart to carry a basic first aid kit, whistle and a waterproof phone pouch - just in case.
