Topaz Uno Sailing Dinghy

If you're looking for a dinghy that works for a complete beginner and still puts a smile on the face of a confident club sailor, the Topaz Uno from Topper Sailboats deserves a serious look. It's a modern, versatile boat built for the 21st century and it's one of the most popular dinghies we sell here at Sailing Chandlery.

Whether you're a parent researching a first boat for your children, an adult getting back into sailing, or a club sailor after something a bit more exciting on a Sunday afternoon, the Topaz Uno has a rig option to suit you.

What is the Topaz Uno?

The Topaz Uno is a groundbreaking multipurpose sailing dinghy with a robust, maintenance-free Trilam construction hull that's built to last. It's modern, stylish, and genuinely easy to sail, which is exactly why it's the boat of choice for some of the biggest names in sailing holidays and training, including Sunsail, Mark Warner, Neilson, and the RYA.

What makes it truly special is its flexibility. The same hull can be rigged in four different ways, from a simple beginner setup right through to a full racing configuration with a spinnaker and trapeze. That means you're not buying a boat you'll outgrow in a season. You're buying a boat you can grow into with a few rig upgrades.

The Four Rig Options Explained

Topaz Uno Plus: The Perfect Starter

The Uno Plus is the entry-level rig, and it's a brilliant place to begin. It comes with a straightforward mainsail setup using a Dacron sail, and you can add a jib for a bit of extra performance when you're ready. It's forgiving, stable, and confidence-building, making it ideal for children taking their first steps in sailing or adults new to dinghies.

If you're a complete beginner, this is where we'd normally recommend starting.

Topaz Uno Race Plus: More Power, More Fun

The Uno Race Plus steps things up with a 6.9 square metre fully battened Mylar mainsail, a noticeable upgrade over the Dacron sail on the Uno Plus. It adds more drive and responsiveness, making it the right choice for a confident beginner or an improver who wants to push their sailing on.

This is often the rig we recommend for sailors who've had some experience, perhaps through a club or sailing school, and want to keep progressing without switching boats.

Topaz Uno Race X: Serious Performance

The Uno Race X adds an 8.4 square metre isometric gennaker to the Race Plus setup. That's where things get genuinely exciting. This rig gives you serious downwind speed and is suitable for club sailors right through to more experienced racers who want a fast, versatile dinghy without the complexity of a full racing class boat.

If you want the adrenaline of a spinnaker without a huge learning curve, the Race X is a great option.

Topaz Tres X: The Full Package

The Tres X is the top-spec version of the Topaz Uno, and it's a serious piece of kit. It adds a trapeze, a fully battened powered main, a high aspect ratio jib, and a large gennaker. Because of the extra power involved, it also comes with a larger mast and shrouds for added structural support.

What's impressive is that despite being the most powerful setup, the Tres X still delivers outstanding stability. It's not a boat that punishes you for being on the wrong side of a gust. It just goes fast.

A Real Customer Example

Recently, a customer came to us looking at the Topaz Uno Race Plus for his children. They'd already sailed the Topaz elsewhere, which is one of the reasons he chose it: familiarity and confidence in the boat.

We had a good conversation about the options. Did they need the spinnaker of the Race X, or would it be better to keep things simpler with the Topaz Uno Plus? After talking through their ability and how quickly they were progressing, he settled on the Race Plus. His children had the skills to handle the more powerful Mylar sail, and it gave them room to develop without overcomplicating things.

That's the kind of conversation we have with every customer. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, and we'd rather spend the time getting it right than have you end up with the wrong rig.

What Does a Topaz Uno Cost?

The Topaz Uno starts from just over £4,000 for the hull and boat parts. Our most popular package option, which includes a launching trolley and cover, comes in at £4,735. If you're looking at the Race X package with the larger sails, spinnaker, and upgraded mast, the full package including trolley and top cover is around £6,400.

Compared to other dinghies in this category, the Topaz Uno represents genuine value for money. And the fact that you can upgrade rigs as your sailing develops means you're not buying a new boat every time you improve.

Practical Things to Think About Before Buying

One thing that surprises a lot of first-time buyers is how manageable the Topaz Uno is in terms of transport. If you're starting with the Topaz Uno Plus, you can put it on a roof rack, which removes the need for a road trailer entirely. That makes getting to the water significantly easier.

If you're a sailing club member, it's worth checking that there's space in the dinghy park before you commit. And if you're thinking about racing, there's a healthy fleet of Topaz boats across the UK, so you're very likely to find others to sail against at your local club.

Why Buy From Sailing Chandlery?

We're a five-star rated retailer, and we've delivered hundreds of dinghies to sailors all across the UK. When we deliver a boat, we don't just drop off a hull and a bag of parts. We rig the boat, set it up properly, and make sure every question is answered before we leave. You should be ready to go sailing, not standing in your driveway scratching your head.

Boats can be delivered anywhere in the UK, or collected from our base on Canvey Island in Essex. If you're unsure which rig is right for you, get in touch with us. We'll ask the right questions, find out about your sailing background and where you want to take it, and point you in the right direction.

The Topaz Uno is a boat worth getting excited about. Let's make sure you get the right version of it.
